What is BYOK?

Bring Your Own Key — what it means and why it's different

BYOK stands for Bring Your Own Key. You store your own API key. Digestion, search, and chat use that key, and the provider bills you directly.

When a Motif is processed — transcribed, categorized, and structured — that's an AI call. Chat is another, and it always uses a key you store. With BYOK, those calls go out on your key.

You pay the provider for the compute, and you pay Legate $0.99/month for the platform. No markup, no bundling, no guessing about hidden AI costs.

Managed ($2.99/month) covers AI note digestion and search on platform keys. Chat is not part of Managed. Store your own key if you want to chat; that usage is billed by your provider.

How to add an API key

Create a key with your model provider, then paste it into your Legate account settings. Digestion, search, and chat will use that key.

Common questions about pricing

When your 14-day trial ends, your account moves to a read-only state — you can view everything you've captured, but you can't add new notes or run AI processing until you subscribe. Nothing is deleted. You have as much time as you need to decide whether to continue.
Yes. You can change your plan at any time from your account settings. Switching to Managed covers digestion and search with platform keys. Switching to BYOK means digestion, search, and chat use a key you store. Chat on either plan requires that stored key.
Your library can grow without a storage ceiling — data lives in your own SQLite database on a persistent volume. Managed and trial plans include 500 new note creations per UTC calendar month; updating or appending to existing notes does not count. BYOK has no monthly creation limit.
On BYOK, digestion, search, and chat use a key you store, and your provider bills you. On Managed, note digestion and search run on platform keys. Chat is not included on Managed; add your own key if you want to chat.
Yes. If you're not satisfied within the first 30 days of a paid subscription, reach out at hello@legate.studio and we'll refund your payment, no questions asked. We'd rather lose the revenue than keep it from someone who got no value.
Payments are processed through Stripe. We accept all major credit and debit cards (Visa, Mastercard, American Express). Stripe handles all billing securely — we never see your card details.
