Bring Your Own Key — what it means and why it's different

BYOK stands for Bring Your Own Key. Instead of Legate bundling AI usage into a higher subscription price, you connect your own Google Gemini API key and Legate uses it directly.

When a Motif is processed — transcribed, categorized, and structured — that's an AI call. When you run semantic search, that's another. With BYOK, those calls go to Google using your API key, and Google bills you directly at their standard rates.

Google's Gemini Flash API is inexpensive — typical personal use costs a few cents per month. You pay Google for the actual compute, and you pay Legate $0.99/month for the platform. No markup, no bundling, no guessing about hidden AI costs.

The Managed tier is the simpler option: we provide the AI, nothing to configure, and it all works immediately. Managed costs more because we're absorbing the AI costs on your behalf.

How to get a Gemini API key

Visit Google AI Studio, sign in with a Google account, and create an API key. It takes about two minutes. Then paste it into your Legate account settings — that's it.

Common questions about pricing

When your 14-day trial ends, your account moves to a read-only state — you can view everything you've captured, but you can't add new notes or run AI processing until you subscribe. Nothing is deleted. You have as much time as you need to decide whether to continue.

Yes. You can change your plan at any time from your account settings. Switching from BYOK to Managed removes the API key requirement. Switching from Managed to BYOK means you'll need to add your own Gemini API key before AI processing will work.

There is no hard cap on notes in either paid tier. Your data lives in your own SQLite database on a persistent volume. For very large libraries, storage costs scale naturally, but there is no artificial limit imposed on your knowledge base.

Gemini Flash is one of Google's lowest-cost models. For personal knowledge base use — processing voice notes, generating embeddings, categorizing content — most users spend well under $1/month with Google directly. Heavy daily users might spend $2–5/month. Google publishes their current rates at ai.google.dev/pricing.

Yes. If you're not satisfied within the first 30 days of a paid subscription, reach out at hello@legate.studio and we'll refund your payment, no questions asked. We'd rather lose the revenue than keep it from someone who got no value.

Payments are processed through Stripe. We accept all major credit and debit cards (Visa, Mastercard, American Express). Stripe handles all billing securely — we never see your card details.
