2. Structure — titles, categories, connections
Raw input is not knowledge. A pile of audio files is not searchable. A wall of plain text is not retrievable by an AI in any meaningful way. The system must transform raw input into structured entries: a title that describes the content, a category that places it in context, a date, and connections to related entries. This structure is what makes the knowledge base a knowledge base rather than an archive.
3. Retrieve — semantic search, not just keyword
Keyword search finds exact matches. Semantic search finds relevant content. "What did I decide about authentication?" should return your authentication decision notes even if those notes don't contain the word "authentication" verbatim. For a knowledge base built for AI access, semantic retrieval is the baseline — it's how the AI will query the system, and it's how you'll query it too.
4. Expose — a machine-readable interface
A web UI is for humans. For AI access, the knowledge base needs a protocol interface that an AI client can call programmatically. MCP (Model Context Protocol) is the current standard for this. An MCP server exposes the knowledge base as a set of callable tools: search, retrieve, create, update. The AI assistant calls these tools during a conversation — the same way it might call a web search tool to look up information — and gets structured results back.

Why Ownership Matters More Than You Think
Most cloud PKB tools store your knowledge in their database. You access it through their application. Their uptime is your uptime. Their pricing changes are your pricing changes. Their policy decisions — about what they store, how they use it, whether they train AI on it — apply to your knowledge.
For a personal knowledge base that your AI uses as working memory, this is a meaningful dependency. If the PKB tool goes down, your AI loses its memory for that work session. If the tool changes its pricing, you either pay or lose access to your accumulated knowledge. If the tool gets acquired and pivots, your knowledge moves with their business decisions.

Capture, Structure, Retrieve, Expose — How It Works
In Legate Studio, the pipeline from raw input to AI-accessible knowledge works like this:
Capture: You submit a voice memo, audio file, or text as a Motif — Legate's term for raw input. You can do this from the web app on any device. The interface is minimal: submit the input, done.
Structure: Legate's AI processes the Motif: transcribing audio, generating a title, assigning a category, and writing a structured note from the raw content. The result is a titled, categorized knowledge entry that appears in your Library. The AI also adds it to your knowledge graph — connecting it to related entries based on category and semantic similarity.
Retrieve: Every entry is searchable semantically via the web app. Search by category, keyword, or meaning — Legate finds relevant entries. The knowledge graph gives you a visual map of how your entries connect, showing clusters that represent areas of accumulated knowledge.
Expose: Legate Studio runs an MCP server. Connect it to Claude Desktop by adding a config entry. From that point, Claude has access to MCP tools: search your knowledge base, retrieve notes by ID or category, create new entries. The same knowledge base you browse in the web app is queryable by your AI in real time, during your conversations.
The result: one knowledge store, two interfaces — one for humans (the web app) and one for AI (MCP). Capture happens primarily through the web app. Retrieval happens both ways. New entries can be created either through the web app or by the AI during a conversation.
